WRC: Elfyn Evans left with no regrets

Must read

WRC runner-up Elfyn Evans says he must make ‘small improvements’ to try to finish the job he started this season.

The Welshman led the championship going into last weekend’s ACI Rally Monza finale, but missed out on a maiden world title after crashing on Saturday afternoon. Evans’ mistake left the way clear for Toyota Gazoo Racing team-mate Sébastien Ogier to clinch a seventh title.

Having come close this year, Evans says he has a clearer picture of what’s required to end next year one position higher.

“We know,” he said, “that Séb is extremely strong across the board. Whether it’s tricky conditions, whether it’s looking after your tyres on dry gravel rallies and all of these types of things. He’s very difficult to beat at the end of the day, he’s been a tough team-mate.

“He’s a very worthy champion this year and, for sure, we’re going to have to find some small improvements to take the fight to him and try to beat him next year. There’s a lot of areas where we feel we can improve.”

Evans has no regrets about his decision to attack the final round rather than sitting back to defend his 14-point advantagein WRC.

“I think it was the right way, the right approach,” he said. “I don’t regret anything. It was important to keep on Séb’s tail. Actually, the pace and the way I was driving all felt normal. It wasn’t a forced rhythm or taking big risks.

“It’s just the way it’s gone this time, but, I guess, we can take confidence from the fact that we have got the speed to fight at the front. Obviously, we can look forward to next year.”
